  • According to the authors, the UK economy is far from OK. It’s a critical moment in the country’s history, experiencing an economic slump, unprecedented wage stagnation, and yawning wealth disproportions. 
  • After years of austerity and underfunding, it’s necessary for the state to start investing in the sector to revive and support sustainable and diverse economic growth.
  • The state should take action to protect strategic industries, such as steel, transport, communication, or energy, and embrace the “Build Local / Buy UK” approach.
  • There is a strong need to boost future-oriented education, where employees have a chance to up-skill or re-skill as the technology keeps on evolving and creating a growing skills gap. Developing new skills and making the most of new technology will both be paramount to ensure a bright future for the manufacturing landscape.
  • Automation, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and other technological milestones are regarded as an opportunity for business and a threat for workers at the same time. But it’s a matter of maintaining a wise approach to employ those advancements in the best way.

With regard to the last point – Introducing Industry 4.0 and its automation features should align with protecting jobs and preventing pay cuts, promoting shorter working time, and up-skilling and re-skilling the British workforce.
